Quick answer

To polish a boat: wash and degrease, remove stains, apply a cutting compound with a polisher in small sections, finish with a fine polish and protect with wax or sealant. Work in the shade on a cool hull without pressing too hard. Re-wax twice per season.

Steps

  1. Wash and degrease the hull.
  2. Remove rust, scale and yellow stains.
  3. Apply cutting compound in 50x50 cm sections with a polisher.
  4. Finish with fine polish and a soft pad.
  5. Protect with wax or sealant and buff off with microfibre.

Tools

Rotary or dual-action polisher, wool (cutting) and foam (finishing) pads, cutting compound, fine polish, wax or sealant, masking tape and microfibre cloths.

Step by step

  1. Wash and degrease: dirt acts like sandpaper and scratches gelcoat.
  2. Decontaminate: remove rust spots and bow yellowing with dedicated products.
  3. Mask teak, rubbers and decals.
  4. Cut with compound in small sections, medium speed, without pressing too hard.
  5. Polish with fine polish to a deep gloss.
  6. Protect with wax or sealant; let it haze and buff off with microfibre.

Common mistakes

  • Polishing in the sun or on a hot hull: product dries and leaves marks.
  • Dwelling too long on one spot or edge: you can burn through the gelcoat.
  • Skipping the final protection: the shine won’t last.
  • Getting compound on teak: mask it first (teak care).

How often
