Boat teak maintenance: a complete season-by-season guide

Quick answer

Teak maintenance means cleaning it gently after each use, deep cleaning once or twice a year, checking and repairing caulking and plugs every season, optionally protecting it with a sealer (not oil on decks) and sanding only when essential.

Seasonal routine

WhenWhat to do
After each tripRinse with salt or fresh water and a soft brush
Weekly in seasonMild marine soap, scrub across the grain
Start of seasonDeep clean, check caulking and plugs
End of seasonClean, repair seams and protect from winter sun
Every few yearsLight sanding and partial re-caulking if needed

Seal, oil or leave it natural?

  • Natural (silvery grey): lowest maintenance and the most recommended for decks.
  • Teak sealer: keeps the golden tone and repels stains. Needs renewing every few months.
  • Oil: not recommended on decks (slippery and mould-prone). Only for decorative pieces.
  • Varnish: only for interior pieces or handrails, never walking areas.

Caulking

The black seams stop water getting between planks. Inspect them every season:

  • If a seam has lifted or cracked, cut it out, clean, prime and refill.
  • If many fail, a full re-caulk by a professional is the better option.

Plugs and screws

Plugs cover the screws on screwed decks. If they come loose, water can follow the screw into the core. Replace them promptly with teak plugs set in epoxy or polyurethane glue.

Sanding: only when needed

Sanding restores a smooth, even surface but removes wood. Do it only when seams stand proud or the surface is very uneven, with medium-fine grit and always along the grain.

Winter care

Clean thoroughly, let it dry and cover the deck with a breathable cover if the boat will sit in the sun for months. Plan it with the rest of your jobs in the boat maintenance calendar.

Frequently asked questions

How often does teak need re-caulking?

There’s no fixed interval: repair seams when they lift or crack. A well-built deck can go many years with spot repairs before needing a full re-caulk.

Is sealing teak a good idea?

It keeps the golden colour and makes cleaning easier, but must be renewed often. If you’re happy with natural grey, it isn’t necessary.
