How long does boat teak last? Lifespan and signs of wear

Updated: 5 min readCaranva Boats

Quick answer

A 10–12 mm natural teak deck lasts 15 to 25 years if cleaned gently and the caulking is maintained; poorly kept it can last under 10. Synthetic teak typically lasts 10–15 years or more. Consider replacement when thickness drops below 4–5 mm or leaks appear.

Lifespan by material

TypeApprox. lifespanWhat shortens it
Natural teak 10 – 12 mm15 – 25 yearsPressure washing, frequent sanding, harsh cleaners
Plantation teak15 – 20 yearsSame, slightly more prone to wear
Synthetic teak10 – 15+ yearsStrong sun, impacts, incompatible products

What wears teak out

  • Every sanding removes 0.5–1 mm of wood.
  • Pressure washers and stiff brushes tear out the soft grain.
  • Acid cleaners used too often.
  • Sun and temperature swings that open seams.
  • Substrate moisture if seams or screws leak.

How to measure wear

  1. Find a loose plug or carefully remove one.
  2. Measure the wood left above the screw or substrate.
  3. Compare several areas: high-traffic zones (cockpit, side decks) wear first.

Rule of thumb: over 6 mm, healthy; 4–6 mm, monitor and avoid sanding; under 4 mm, start planning replacement.

Signs it’s time to act

  • Lifted or cracked caulking → re-caulk.
  • Loose plugs or exposed screws → replace plugs; if widespread, consider replacement.
  • Damp patches or drips below deck → inspect urgently, the core may be wet.

How to make it last

Clean gently (how to clean boat teak), inspect caulking every season and avoid sanding unless essential. All in our teak maintenance guide. If it has reached the end, see how it’s replaced and what it costs.

Frequently asked questions

How many times can teak be sanded?

It depends on the starting thickness. With 10–12 mm and light sanding (0.5–1 mm) there’s room for several over its life, but each one shortens it, so sand only when needed.

Is grey teak damaged?

No. Silvery grey is natural surface weathering from the sun and does not affect strength. It is purely cosmetic.
