How much does it cost to maintain a boat per year? Real breakdown by length
Quick answer
As a rule of thumb, maintaining a boat costs 5–10 % of its value every year, excluding the berth. In Spain an 8–9 m boat typically costs €2,500–5,000 a year to maintain (haul-out and antifouling, engine service, cleaning, small repairs and insurance) and a 12 m boat €5,000–10,000. Berthing is on top and varies hugely by marina.
The 5–10 % rule
Industry professionals usually budget annual maintenance at 5–10 % of the boat’s value: less for newer, well-kept boats, more for boats aged 10–20 years. Add berthing, fuel and insurance, which depend less on the boat’s condition.

Berthing: the item that varies most
An 8 m berth at a yacht club can cost €1,500–3,500 a year; a 12 m berth in an Ibiza or Mallorca marina in season, several times that. Compare available moorings or see prices by port on our maintenance by port pages.
Costs that come every few years
- Teak deck replacement: every 15–25 years; see teak replacement cost.
- Batteries: every 4–7 years (lead-acid) or 10+ (lithium).
- Sails and rigging: sails every 8–12 years; standing rigging every 10–15.
- Canvas and upholstery: every 5–10 years.
- Osmosis treatment or full repaint: occasional but expensive.
Set money aside each year for these and avoid nasty surprises.
Where you can save (and where you can’t)
- Yes: compare quotes, group jobs into one haul-out, do maintenance outside peak season, clean the boat yourself.
- No: skipping oil or impeller changes, stretching antifouling, ignoring teak leaks or gelcoat cracks. Cheap is expensive at sea.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to maintain a 12 m sailing yacht?
Roughly €4,000–10,000 a year excluding the berth: haul-out and antifouling, engine service, cleaning, insurance and contingencies. Sails, rigging and teak are renewed every few years and should be provisioned.
Is a motorboat or a sailing yacht cheaper to maintain?
A sailing yacht has sails and rigging to renew but fewer engine hours. A motorboat burns more fuel and has costlier engine services. For pure annual maintenance they tend to fall in similar ranges at equal length.
